The Chris Ravenhall Trophy for memoir, 30 April 2023

The Chris Ravenhall Memoir Trophy
We're looking forward to presenting our stunning new Chris Ravenhall Trophy for Memoir for the first time this Tuesday

Remembering Chris Ravenhall
1946-2023

Chris Ravenhall, circa 2015

Chris was a stalwart of Strathkelvin Writers’ Group for many years, serving as both VP and President and providing the benefit of her deep wisdom and wry humour on the committee. She had unwavering commitment to the group and derived immense pride and joy from the successes, large and small, of its members. She taught literature and theatre studies at the OU and Strathclyde Universities and wrote and directed pantomime for 25 years, working with Strathclyde Theatre Group and MOPAC Theatre Group in Milton of Campsie. She also wrote a number of plays based on female experience and several large community plays funded by East Dunbartonshire Council and East Dunbartonshire Arts Council.

Chris battled ill-health for the last few years but her determination kept her active in the group till the very end. She will be remembered with much affection and her loss will be felt by many of us for a long time. RIP, Chris.

Leela Soma

In December we were very sad to hear of the news of our friend and supporter, Leela.
Leela was a member of Strathkelvin Writers’ Group in the 1990s. She was very active in the local literary scene, became Scriever for the Federation of Writers and she gained enormous publishing success with her poetry and three novels: Twice Born, Bombay Baby and Murder at the Mela. She appeared at literary festivals including Stanza and Aye Write. Her work was inspired by her dual Indian and Scottish heritage and she was a great champion of writers from diverse cultural backgrounds, founding the Kavya Prize in conjunction with Glasgow University, to promote Scottish writers of colour.
Her short piece written for our 40th anniversary celebrations:
Strathkelvin Writers
Warmth, friendship, generosity, words that conjure up SWG for me. A woman of colour, a hesitant writer was welcomed with open arms. SWG gave me my first trophy in my life. My writing journey started there. Grateful always, dear friends.

The Christmas Party

. . . on 6 December, 2022, was a rowdy riot with four teams of Strathkelviners battling it out to bag the most points in our annual quiz. Competition was tough and the best team undoubtedly won! A game of charades followed and insightful guessing was plentiful in spite of the dubious ‘acting’ on show. The evening culminated with our second-hand book sale and a sumptuous spread. Christmas wishes were expressed all round and friendships were shaped and strengthened.

A happy Christmas to our members and we look forward to seeing you all again on 24 January, 2023.

Margot Aked

Margot Aked Memorial photo 4th June 1932-10th June 2022

We were very sad to hear of the death of Margot Aked, our honorary president and founder, on 10th June, only six days after celebrating her 90th birthday with her family.

Margot was active in Strathkelvin Writers’ Group until just a few years ago when failing health led to her inability to attend and ultimately to having to leave her beloved long-time home and stunning garden and be looked after at Lillyburn Care Home in Kirkintilloch.

One of several women who, together, founded the group in 1982, Margot was a tremendous force for good. She was a gentlewoman with the warmest smile and she was abundant, attentive and thoughtful in her support of scores of writers over the years. She was firm in her ideas about the organisation of the group. She was firm in her determination to make incomers feel immediately embraced and gathered into the fold. And as a professional editor, she was firm in her views about the standards for which we should strive in our written work. Margot was a true role model and we will miss her very much.

Our thoughts are with her daughters, her wider family and her friends and acquaintances. Margot engaged with wide and varied pursuits throughout her life and particularly with art and writing. It is certain that she left her mark on many, many people along with countless wonderful memories to treasure.

In this, our special 40th anniversary year, we have been lucky enough to add three new trophies to our collection. They are the Theresa O’Hare Poetry Prize, the Ruby Rose Bowl, which will be awarded for a different category each year and the Eddie Mail prize for non-fiction.

Ruby Anniversary

On 3rd May,we celebrated our 40th anniversary in style at the Glazert Country House Hotel in Lennoxtown. Our annual prize giving followed the AGM and a celebratory dinner. With three new awards added for this, our special year, we presented 6 trophies, with the most successful writer of the year award going to Andy Raffan.

We were delighted to welcome our special guests, Gerry and Gill O’Hare. Gerry is the youngest son of our beloved Theresa O’Hare who passed away in November. He cut the cake and presented the Theresa O’ Hare Poetry Prize, a silver quaich plus £100 donated by the family, to Matthew Keeley.

The occasion also marked our first year of face-to-face meetings after 17 months online which gave us ample additional cause for merrymaking!

Theresa O’Hare

We are heartbroken to announce that our wonderful member, Theresa O’Hare, passed away on Thursday 11 November after a recent illness. She was with her family in Edinburgh at the time of her death.

Only a few weeks ago, she was participating in our sessions with the same passion and insight as always and it’s hard to believe we will no longer see her at our meetings. We don’t doubt, however, that she will be watching over us and keeping tabs on what we are discussing, reading, writing and performing! Perhaps she will even be doing her own adjudicating and encouraging us to get our work out there!

Our thoughts are with Theresa’s family at this very difficult time for them. It was always very apparent how much Theresa’s family meant to her and it came through often in her writing. She made us smile many times with her memories and beautiful words encapsulating what it meant to be a mum, a grandmother and going back further, a wife and a daughter. And she made us sit up and listen when she talked about and read her work on so many other issues.

Theresa had a very big place in our hearts. She was a hugely valued member of Strathkelvin Writers’ Group not only because she gave everyone such kind encouragement but because of her interest in everyone, her generosity and her absolute humanity. There will be a lot of sadness at her passing but also lots of thanksgiving for such a wonderful person.

40th Anniversary

We are excited about our 40th Anniversary which will take place next year, in 2022, and we will look forward to sharing news of some special events to mark the occasion. We hope to return to live events at some point in 2021 and will share news of that as soon as we are able. Last year was a great success for the group despite the difficulties caused by Covid.
